Wewathenna Camping Site is one of the calmest, most peaceful, and couple-friendly camping places I have ever visited 💚
Imagine camping above the clouds, feeling the cool mountain wind, enjoying wide open views, and seeing Adam’s Peak shining in the distance ⛰️✨
The most amazing part? There is a small reservoir on the top of the mountain, which makes the place feel even more special 🌊

A Touch of History at Wewathenna
In the middle of the camping area, you will find the remains of an old colonial bungalow. This building was burned during the 1989 unrest in Sri Lanka and now stands abandoned. It adds a quiet historical feeling to the site and reminds visitors of the country’s past.
Camping Management & Safety Advice
The campsite is managed by Ramesh, who is the key contact person at Wewathenna. He issues tickets and helps campers choose the best and safest places to set up tents. His local knowledge is very helpful, especially for first-time visitors.
⚠️ Important Safety Note:
Bathing in the reservoir is not allowed. The lake bottom has deep mud, which can be very dangerous. The water is mainly used for agriculture, not for swimming.

This makes Wewathenna a budget-friendly camping location for friends, families, and small groups.

The Abandoned Cabana at Wawathanna Viewpoint 🏚️
- At the Wawathanna viewpoint, there’s an abandoned cabana that catches your eye 👀
- It seems it was built to give visitors a great spot to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views
- The cabana is perfectly placed at the best viewpoint of Wawathanna 🌄
Current Condition
- Unfortunately, it’s abandoned and not in use
- Made completely of wood and glass, but now not in the best condition
- It looks like it was fully built but never used ❌
🌟 Hopes for the Future
- I really hope one day the Wawathanna Estate manages it properly
- Then, we could spend a night there and fully enjoy the stunning view 🌙💚

My Camping Experience at Wewathenna Camping Site 🏕️
Let me share my personal camping experience at the beautiful Wewathenna Camping Site, which I visited with my wife 💚
Journey to Wewathenna 🏍️
- We started our journey by motorbike, which is the best option due to the road conditions
- I already knew the road well, so riding a bike made things easier for us
- This trip was done one month after the Dithwa incident, so we still saw:
- ⚠️ Roadside landslides between Kandy and Madamahanuwara
Road Conditions 🛣️
- From Madamahanuwara, you must take a narrow road toward Wewathenna
- 🌄 The morning view was very beautiful
- Road condition was good until the Wewathenna camping site turning point
Finding the Turning Point ⚠️
- The turning point is very tricky
- It looks like there is no road at all
- ❌ Google Maps also marked the location incorrectly
- We missed the turn and had to turn back and search again
- If you look carefully, you’ll see:
- A gravel and sand mixed road — that’s the correct path
Extreme Off-Road Experience 🚵
- The road after the turn is extremely off-road
- 🪨 Rolling rocks, deep bumps, sand, and gravel everywhere
- Even riding a bike was very difficult
- It looks like rainwater from the mountain flows directly through this road
- After passing a small Tamil village, the road becomes:
- ❌ Extremely difficult
- 🛺 Even three-wheelers stop and cannot continue
👉 Somehow, we managed to reach the campsite entrance
Camp Site Entrance & Management 🎟️
- At the entrance:
- A man sits near the gate and records visitor details
- 🎫 He issues tickets based on:
- Camping or a day visit
- 💰 Collects a small fee
- The camping site is managed by the Wewathenna Estate
Choosing the Camping Spot 🏕️
- At the top of the mountain:
- 🏞️ Plenty of open space for camping and activities
- When we arrived:
- A family was playing cricket
- The area even feels like a natural playground
- I rode around to find the best camping spot
- Finally, I found:
- 🌊 A perfect place near the Wewathenna Reservoir
- 📸 Amazing reservoir views
📍 I will mark this camping location below
Setting Up Camp ⛺
- Parked the bike at the camping area
- Unpacked all camping gear
- Set up the tent and arranged everything
- Then we just relaxed and settled in
Evening & Facilities 🌤️
- I walked around in the afternoon to enjoy the views
- By early evening:
- 🚶 Most day visitors had left
- We decided to take a shower
- 🚿 Shower and toilet facilities are available
- Located near the destroyed bungalow ruins
📍 I’ll mark this location as well
- 🌬️ The wind was very cold
- Taking a shower was really hard due to the cold
- Somehow, we managed and refreshed ourselves
Night at Wewathenna 🌙
- The night was:
- 🌌 Very calm
- ❄️ Extremely cold because of strong winds
- We truly enjoyed the peaceful night
Magical Morning 🌫️
- Early morning was misty and magical
- 😍 Words can’t explain the beauty
- We walked to the edge of the reservoir
- Spent some time enjoying the views and fresh air
Journey Back 🏠
- Around midday, we packed our gear
- Started our journey back home with beautiful memories 💚
