Maligathanna Raja Maha Viharaya is a very old Buddhist temple in Gampaha, Sri Lanka. It is about 20 minutes from Gampaha town by car. The temple is built on top of a mountain and is surrounded by green trees and hills. It is also a protected historical place in Sri Lanka.
How to Get to Maligathanna Raja Maha Viharaya
Getting to the temple is easy. You can travel by bus or car.
🚌 By Bus (From Gampaha Town):
Take the 205 bus from Gampaha town. You can get on any of these buses:
- Gampaha – Kirindiwela
- Gampaha – Waturugama
- Gampaha – Henegama
- Gampaha – Buthpitiya
Buy a ticket to Buthpitiya.
Tell the bus conductor that you want to get down at the bus stop after Buthpitiya Maha Vidyalaya.

Your Journey Begins with a Hike
To reach the temple, you need to walk up a little hill. It’s not too hard, and the fresh air and views are amazing. When you reach the top, you will see the old temple. There is free parking, and a small shop nearby if you need water or snacks.
A Temple Full of History and Legends
Long ago, this temple was a hiding place for kings. One famous king, Valagamba, ran from his enemies and hid in this temple. You can still see the cave and stone carvings believed to have been made by him.
Another story says that the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha was hidden here. This happened during a time when Sri Lanka was under attack. The relic was later moved to Kandy, where it still remains today.
Because of this, people believe the name “Maligathanna” (meaning palace ground) comes from the relic being hidden here like a royal treasure.
Climb the Stone Steps to the Top
To reach the temple, you climb stone stairs. On the way, you can see small houses far below and green trees everywhere. The temple sits on a big rock and looks over the land like a guardian.
There are old buildings and new ones too. Some parts were broken, but local people helped fix them to keep the temple safe for the future.
